Five on Friday

Happy Friday, y'all! I'm sharing my Five on Friday below. Hope you enjoy! :)

{one}

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but before the other day I had never listened to a podcast. I've always been intimidated by them, thinking they wouldn't keep my attention. And I'm a reader and like to hold words, re-read them, and underline. So I'd never given a podcast a go. Anyway, after I dropped the girls off at school the other day I came home to do a lot of fun stuff around the house...cleaning, laundry, prepping dinner, etc. I usually turn on the news during this time (because I'm a news junkie) but opted for a podcast instead. I've felt for a while now that the constant consumption of the news is bringing me down, big-time. So, I found a podcast by my girl Jen Hatmaker; I put my phone in my back pocket; and I went about my chores...but they didn't feel like chores while listening to her chat with Brene Brown! I felt like I was getting stuff accomplished at home while simultaneously learning and laughing. It truly fed my soul. If you haven't, I highly recommend checking out a podcast. The one I listened to was "Series Two, Episode Two: Getting Vulnerable with Dr. Brene Brown." And right now I'm listening to "Series Two, Episode Six: Finding Beauty in the Mess with Glennon Doyle." It's chock full of wisdom, and I just want everyone in the world to listen to these on repeat...I feel like we might make some progress! You can check out Jen's podcasts here.

My best friend in the whole world, Emily, just started working as an independent beauty guide for LimeLight by Alcone. Have y'all heard of that brand? Emily is one of those people who tells it like it is (but is sweet!), so I always know I can trust what comes out of her mouth. She loves the products and uses them herself and wanted to send me some to try as well.

LimeLight is cool because it's free of harmful chemicals and is also paraben and cruelty-free. I think as we all learn more about ingredients in products we're trying to consciously do better, right? (Except I don't want to know what's in Diet Coke because I'm not giving that up...ever.) I really like that their mission is to provide products that heal, hydrate, and rebalance your skin...whereas other brands focus more on stripping and replenishing.

LimeLight offers products for three different types of skin: normal to combination or sun damaged skin, normal to oily or acne-prone skin, and normal to dry or mature skin. Emily sent me samples from each collection, and I had so much fun trying them all.

The Skin Polish was hands-down my favorite. It's a scrub and mask, and it left my skin feeling like a baby's bottom. So soft and smooth.

I also enjoyed using the Sotoks, which is a booster (serum) that works along with your moisturizer. This one in particular works to eliminate dark spots, and as someone with freckles and a history of sun exposure that I wish I could reverse, I feel like this helps. And it just feels good on my skin.

If you're interested in learning more about the products mentioned or exploring the skin care line for yourself, check out Emily's page below. Or if you have questions, you can email her at ehcarnes79@gmail.com.

Last weekend the girls and I worked on the unicorn pumpkin craft I shared last Friday. We ended up not going all in and just painted the pumpkins and added tons of glitter instead. I still thought they turned out pretty cute! Who knows, maybe we'll add a horn to them this weekend!

We also drew and painted scarecrows, and that was fun. I found an easy tutorial online that showed you how to bare bones sketch out a scarecrow. I thought Lily's turned out so cute. Hadley's is sweet too, but she's still learning how to stay in the lines, etc. She's more of an abstract art kind of girl! ;)

I'm getting my hair colored today, and I'm so excited. I had to bite the bullet about 6 months ago and start getting my grey covered. Ugh. I hate hair maintenance. I went to the nicest lady, but after three tries, she just couldn't seem to get the color right. I have dark, dark brown hair (almost black), and she kept lightening it up to an auburn color. And that washes me out, big-time. So, I'm going to a new place today and hope this stylist gets my vision...which is to simply just take away the grey.

Now a funny story. On Wednesday morning I got up and got ready, took Hadley to school, and headed to my hair appointment (thinking it was that day). I get there and tell the receptionist that I'm there for my 9 o'clock with Ashley. She smiles and tells me no one named Ashley works there. So I'm like, "OK, I must've just gotten the name wrong. It happens." And she asks for my name. I tell her, and she says, "You have an appointment with Sarah on Friday." At least I went to the right salon, right?!?! Guys...is this just getting older or is it too many browsers open at one time? Because I do stuff like this all.the.time.

J.Crew Factory had a BIG sale last weekend (everything was 50% off), and I snagged a few goodies with some leftover birthday money. I was so pleased with everything I purchased!

If you're looking for a good pair of high-waisted denim at a lower price point, look no further. These fit like a gem. If you have any sort of a tummy, I'd recommend sizing up.

This top is so pretty and looks more expensive than it is! How pretty is the embroidery? It's a thicker cotton, and I love the bell sleeves too.

This sweater also comes in grey and black, but I was drawn to the pink. How cute will it be paired with dark denim jeans and mules?

I'm always looking for cool, simple pendant necklaces. This one is both. And it's lightweight!

Obsessed with these shoes. They also come in grey and neutral, but I liked the black just for something different. They are so comfy and run TTS.

I hope everyone has the best weekend. Rob turned in a HUGE project at work earlier this week, so we're excited to finally have him free from that!

Weekend Update

Hey guys. Hope everyone had a great weekend. We surely did!

First, I can't ignore today's date. September 11. How in the world has it been 16 years since that dreadful day? New York will always be a part of my heart...it's the greatest place on this Earth, in my opinion. Today I'm thinking of those who lost loved ones on that day. God bless all of you.

Our weekend: Rob is working on a huge project at work, and he's been at the office what seems like 24/7. He worked most of the weekend, so the girls and I had some girl-time.

Before we picked Lily up from school on Friday, Hadley and I had a picnic in their treehouse. How cute is she?

Friday night we met my parents for Mexican and sat outside. The weather here has been glorious, and we've enjoyed every second of it.

Saturday morning we picked up donuts, and the girls were sweet enough to go to Sephora with me. I picked up some new skin products, and I'm loving them so far.

I'm reading Jen Hatmaker's new book Of Mess and Moxie and can't get enough of it. It's one of those books where I'm underlining nearly every sentence. The highlighted portion below especially resonated with me.

Saturday afternoon Lily lost her first top tooth! I can't get over how different she looks!

We skipped church on Sunday because Hadley is getting a little cold. She still felt well enough to play outside, and we enjoyed most of our day in our backyard!

I adore the picture below...I think it perfectly captures the joy of childhood. Look at those happy, carefree faces!

I kept Hadley home from school today, so we're watching Trolls right now before I get busy with typical Monday stuff.

And, this is it...the week I've been looking forward to for what seems like forever. Rob and I are heading to New Orleans on Thursday to see U2 at the Superdome! This is a bucket list item of mine...they're one of my favorite bands of all-time, and I have heard they are incredible live. I am so stoked, I don't know if I'll be able to sleep! I'm sure this week will creep by...

I hope everyone has a great day and a happy week. I'll be back with some fashion-related posts in a few days! :)

A Little Bit of This...

How is everyone's week going? My days are so mixed up after the Easter holidays. On that note, I thought I'd start a new post series: A Little Bit of This...(otherwise known as Brain Dump, Stream of Consciousness, ADHD Exposed, Random Bits, etc.). Ha! It'll contain a little bit of everything, and I've already had a lot of fun putting this one together. So, without further adieu...

///

My little ham, Hadley. Is this not the cutest outfit you've ever seen? Details below. And how skinny are her little legs? As my parents used to tell me, "We've got to put some meat on those bones." :)

///

I'm always on the hunt for new TV shows, especially ones that Rob and I can watch together. Any recs? I watch ALL the Bravo shows, and Rob likes The History Channel. Where can we find some common ground? I did recently finish up "Big Little Lies," and how good was it?! I'd read the book, and I loved it as well. And the music from the show...I caught myself frantically Googling almost every song that I didn't recognize. And I found a new favorite: Leon Bridges. If you haven't heard of him, download the song "River" immediately. So.freaking.good.

I've been a big fan of Jen Hatmaker's for years. I'm sure most of you have heard of her, but she's a Christian author, and I feel like a lot of mothers can relate to her. She's hilarious, but she also shares so much wisdom and depth in her writing. Back in the fall (I think it was), she spoke out in support of gay marriage and took a lot of flack from some in the Christian community. LifeWay stopped selling her books; she was abandoned by some "friends." It really tore me up, both for her and for Christians as a whole...and for people who now had even more reason to say, "Why would I want to be a part of that?" Anyway, it was obvious that all of this truly shattered her, and she recently addressed it beautifully in this blog post: My Saddest Good Friday in Memory. It resonated with me in so many ways.

Speaking of quirky Christians, I was so stoked that my favorite author ever recently released a new book. Anne Lamott's books have really grown my faith, and I'm loving her newest book so far.

I'm loving this dress from Old Navy. And it comes in tall, which makes me feel like I need to snag it stat.

I've mentioned before, but I'm a self-admitted candle snob. Target has some of my favorites that don't break the bank and still smell fresh and have a long-lasting scent. Which brings me to my newest candle obsession. Y'all...get this candle. If you're a fan of the Nest line, this scent is nearly identical to Blue Garden. The Nest version will set you back $40. The Target version is $12.99. You're welcome!

And since we're singing the praises of Target (always. duh.), their Awesome Shop recently shared one of my Instagram photos. What fun! These sandals really are the best, though. You should get some. And they also come in black and white.

So, that's my brain dump for today. I'll leave you with this quote. Hope everyone has a happy Thursday!
