Teeth Whitening at Home with Smile Brilliant

**This post was sponsored by Smile Brilliant. I've very picky about sponsored content, so anything I share is something I truly love. All opinions are my own and were not edited by the sponsor.**

I don't know if y'all can relate, but my teeth aren't as white as they used to be. Age + coffee + red wine isn't helping my case, and I'm not getting any younger...and I'm certainly not giving up my coffee or red wine!

I've tried teeth whitening in the past (from professional trays made in the dentist's office to over-the-counter strips) and have only been successful for a short time due to extreme sensitivity! I've loved the results but have given up because my teeth had become so sensitive.

When Smile Brilliant reached out to see if I wanted to try their at-home whitening trays, I was honestly a little wary at first only because of those prior sensitivity issues. I wanted whiter teeth but didn't want the pain that went with it! I ultimately decided to try Smile Brilliant because they incorporate a desensitizing gel with each whitening session. And that was just what I (and I imagine many folks) needed!

Another reason Smile Brilliant piqued my interest: you use custom trays that are fitted to your mouth (so the gel gets into all those grooves that the strips don't cover), but you don't have to go to your dentist's office to get them made! I loved being able to make my trays in my bathroom at my convenience. And it was easy peasy.

Each kit contains everything pictured below. Simple, easy-to-follow steps (and pictures) are included to instruct you how to make your dental impressions (which take about 15 minutes). Once you've done that part and allowed the impressions to dry, you seal them up in the prepaid envelope and send them off.

The Smile Brilliant lab creates your custom-fitted trays, and when they're returned to you, it's go-time.

Prior to application, it's recommended that you floss and brush your teeth with water only. The fluoride in toothpaste slows the whitening process, which was news to me! I learned the hard way to not apply too much whitening gel to my trays. Only a thin, steady ribbon of gel is needed, and that amount allows for decreased gum sensitivity too. (By the way, each syringe in your kit contains approximately three to four applications.) Depending on how long you've been whitening and prior sensitivity issues, Smile Brilliant recommends that you whiten anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours. For my first session I whitened for 45 minutes and was pleased to see results after just one use.

When your whitening session is up, it's time to remove the trays and brush your teeth (with toothpaste). Now it's time for the desensitizing gel. After you rinse and dry your trays, apply the desensitizing gel and wear the trays for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.

The folks at Smile Brilliant recommend whitening before bedtime because it allows the desensitizing gel time to work. I noticed less sensitivity when I did this, but I'll admit finding the time after dinner to whiten was tough for me. For my lifestyle, I had the most success popping them in in the morning while I was at the house getting the girls ready for school, making lunches, unloading the dishwasher, etc.

Below are my results after using Smile Brilliant several times a week over six weeks. Pretty good, huh? Now that I've gotten my teeth to a shade that I'm happy with, my plan is to use the trays weekly to maintain the whiteness I've reached.
